New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these medications should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
