The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
