The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
