Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
