EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
